Chattanooga, McGill, Haygood, Forsman, Addison Earn FCS Football Awards (Week 8)

Opta Analyst’s FCS football coverage includes weekly national player and team honors during the regular season, leading into Stats Perform’s season-ending awards, now in their 40th year.

Western Illinois’ Kennedy McGill, UTRGV’s Jaiden Haygood, Idaho’s Owen Forsman and North Carolina Central’s Gino Addison were selected on Monday as the Stats Perform FCS National Players of the Week for Week 8 college football games.

In addition, the Chattanooga Mocs were named the Stats Perform FCS National Team of the Week.

Following are this week’s five honorees plus honorable mention selections:

FCS National Offensive Player of the Week

Kennedy McGill, Western Illinois, QB, 5th Year, 6-1, 225

McGill carried the ball 24 times for 210 yards and three touchdowns, powering Western Illinois past UT Martin 55-24 in the Ohio Valley Conference and becoming the first FCS quarterback since 2007 with three straight games of 180+ rushing yards. He also passed for 139 yards and one touchdown with one interception. His 581 rushing yards in the Leathernecks’ past three games are the most by an FCS signal-caller since 2013.

Honorable Mention: Matt Childs, RB, Brown; Rahshan La Mons, RB, UAlbany; Kamden Sixkiller, QB, Campbell; Elijah Taylor, WR, San Diego

FCS National Defensive Player of the Week

Jaiden Haygood, UTRGV, LB, Jr., 6-0, 218

Haygood raised his single-game tackles record for second-year program UTRGV to 20 in a 30-27 overtime win at Central Arkansas. Two of the stops went for losses and he had 10 solos, including two in overtime. In the first quarter, Haygood stopped a UCA ball carrier for no gain on 4-and-1 at the UTRGV 16. He also broke up two passes and had a QB hurry that resulted in an incompletion. Haygood has three straight and 10 career games with double-figure tackles.

Honorable Mention: Ben Chandler, DB, Howard; Zach Darche, LB, Penn; Blake Houser, LB, Richmond; Jake Lopinto, LB, Robert Morris; Garrett Rogan, LB, Villanova; Stephen Sparrow Jr., LB, Bethune-Cookman; Max Steve, S, Samford; Ibrahim Sanogo, DE, Southern Illinois; Jamari Young, LB, UAlbany

FCS National Special Teams Player of the Week

Owen Forsman, Idaho, PK, Jr., 6-0, 199

Forman kicked a career-long 53-yard field goal as time expired to lift Idaho past Southern Utah 31-28 in the Big Sky. He made all three of his field-goal attempts and both of his extra-point attempts to finish with 11 points. It marked the second game this season that Forsman was perfect on kicks with at least three field goals.

Honorable Mention: Jude Kelley, PK, Chattanooga; Ben Lavelle, P, Dayton; Dyson Parker, KR/RB, Weber State

FCS National Freshman Player of the Week

Gino Addison, North Carolina Central, RB, Fr., 5-9, 192

Addison was a workhorse with 31 carries for 214 yards and two touchdowns as NC Central won at Delaware State 31-12 in a MEAC opener. As the Eagles ended a four-game losing streak that was their longest since 2011, Addison scored on 6- and 16-yard runs in the second half. He’s gained 426 yards from scrimmage in the last two games after having 84 in his first four games.

Honorable Mention: Gavin Beard, QB, Georgetown; Trehsyn Fesili, DE, Idaho State; Blake Fisher, RB, Morehead State; Xavier Johnson, WR, North Alabama; Benjamin Newman, QB, Wagner; Armond Parker, QB, Florida A&M; Kenny Smith, Jr., RB, Monmouth

FCS National Team of the Week

Chattanooga Mocs (41-18 win at Western Carolina)

Coach Rusty Wright’s Mocs (5-3, 4-1) solidified their spot in the Southern Conference title race, scoring 27 unanswered points after trailing 10-7. Jude Kelley started the points run with a school-record 57-yard field goal late in the first half. Running backs Kevin Lalin (135 yards, two TDs) and Journey Wyche (105, one) helped power the offense, while linebacker Zion Rutledge matched his career high with 17 tackles.

Honorable Mention: UAlbany (38-21 win at Rhode Island); St. Thomas (35-13 win at Marist); Stonehill (18-14 win at LIU); Utah Tech (43-26 win at Cal Poly)
