New Draft Nipomo Community Plan Identifies Priorities for Roads, Parks & Public Services

NIPOMO, Calif. (KEYT) - San Luis Obispo County has released the draft update to the Nipomo Community Plan, the public document that will establish a vision for the future and guide land use and transportation decisions over the next several years.

The draft update is now online at the county website allowing residents the opportunity to review the plan and submit comments through Nov. 30, 2026.

Last updated in 1994, the Nipomo Community Plan aims to guide future development and identify priority projects and funding strategies to address the community’s infrastructure and service needs.

According to the 62-page document, four key priorities have been identified, roadway improvements to reduce congestion, including the Southland Interchange project, expanded bicycle lanes and safer crosswalks, additional parks and recreational trails, and investments in community facilities and services, including a potential new community and recreation center.

The draft follows 18 months of community engagement, including three public workshops and two surveys that generated more than 1,400 responses.

County officials are now seeking further public input before the plan advances to hearings before the Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors in early 2027.

"Nipomo has changed a lot over the past 30 years, and as our community has grown, so has the need for better infrastructure and public services,” said District 4 Supervisor and Board Chair Jimmy Paulding, who represents Nipomo. "That's why I advocated for the County to prioritize updating this plan. This is our opportunity to identify the improvements our community needs, establish clear priorities, and develop a strategy to make them happen. Most importantly, I want Nipomo residentsto have a voice in shaping that future."

The 1994 plan helped guide projects that have since been completed, including major roadway improvements, restoration of the historic Dana Adobe, new schools (Nipomo High School, New Tech High School and Dorothea Lange Elementary School) and a public library.

Current efforts include funding for Jim Miller Park and the first phase of the Nipomo Community Park perimeter trail, as well as safer crosswalks in Olde Towne.

A new sheriff’s substation is also planned for construction next year, and the county is exploring a potential partnership with the YMCA to develop a community and recreation center.

Residents can review the draft and provide feedback on proposed projects, suggest changes or identify missing priorities at slocounty.ca.gov/NipomoUpdate.

The county will hold a community workshop from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 8, at Olympic Hall at Nipomo High School, 525 N. Thompson Ave.

The meeting will provide an opportunity to review the plan, ask questions and share additional feedback.

The public comment period closes Monday, Nov. 30.

San Luis Obispo County officials encourage residents to participate before the plan moves to the next stage of review.
