EAST ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The ER/Gananda Bombers football team has high expectations as sectionals approach, with much of their success relying on junior Owen Munding.
“Ever since I was born, there’s always been a football in my hand. It’s just really meant a lot to me this past couple years. And playing high school football means a lot with this team,” Munding said.
Head coach Tim Rose said the team works to give Munding opportunities on offense, defense and special teams so his talents can shine. Munding is the lead running back, but he also plays safety, punt returner and sometimes even quarterback.
“Our coaches have put in a great game plan every week, so whatever they do, just I go out there and like, let’s go, let’s go, let’s do it, let’s get this win and find a way,” Munding said.
The Bombers have gone 4-1 in their last five games, and Munding ran for 290 yards and six touchdowns last week against Lyons/Sodus. Munding credited his teammates for his success.
“Starts with the blocking up front. I can’t thank them enough. They get all the holes open, and that just makes my job a lot easier. I can’t thank enough for the post up front,” Munding said.
Munding’s humility helped earn him a captain spot as a junior, which Rose said was voted on by his teammates.
“That’s an opportunity that’s voted in by his peers. So his teammates voted him as a captain, as a junior. So I think that kind of speaks highly to who he is as a person,” Rose said.
Munding said he is excited to see where football takes him next.
“I’ll go as far as I can. I wouldn’t change the sport for the world. So wherever it takes me, it takes me. And I’ll just, you know, always hoping to play at the next level,” Munding said.
The Bombers will finish their regular season on Friday with a road game against Newark/Marion.
