News10: Beyond The Headlines: How the work of an investigative reporter helped lead to Waterview Heights’ demise

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — It all started with one anonymous source four years ago.

A healthcare worker at Waterview Heights had the courage to call our Deanna Dewberry, with evidence of horrific care practices and dangerous levels of understaffing. So, Deanna started investigating.

The phones wouldn’t stop ringing after her first investigation aired. Caller after caller gave her similar reports, and Deanna knew this was worse than anything she’s ever covered. That was back in 2022.

Now, Waterview Heights Nursing Facility is closed, an outcome News10NBC’s relentless investigations helped lead to. 216 workers will be laid off and more than 160 residents had to find a new place to stay.

Deanna even won a NY Emmy Award for her coverage of the facility. This week, we sat down with her for the latest episode of News10: Beyond The Headlines to discuss her tireless investigations, the atrocities she helped uncover, and how brave anonymous sources helped her continue her coverage.

“When you learn about the depth and the breadth of the atrocities, that’s when you say, ‘I can’t let this story go,'” Deanna shared.
