Carrie Underwood Delivers Powerful Performance of Dolly Parton Classic: ‘Absolutely Breathtaking’

Carrie Underwood closed Wednesday night’s live TV special CMA Presents I Will Always Love You: A Celebration of Dolly Parton with a powerful performance of one of the country legend’s most beloved songs.

Wearing a flowing white dress, Underwood sang Dolly Parton’s 1974 ballad “I Will Always Love You,” with several of the evening’s other performers joining her near the end. The performance brought the ABC broadcast to an emotional close as artists gathered to honor Parton and her musical legacy.

The special also featured Zac Brown performing a “duet” with Parton using her prerecorded vocals on “Butterfly,” while Ella Langley put her own spin on the 1974 hit “Jolene.” Brad Paisley, Vince Gill and other country stars also took part in the celebration.

Fans were quick to praise Underwood’s performance, with one calling her the “perfect choice” to sing Parton’s original country version and applauding her for capturing the singer’s “intonation and style.”

Others described the performance as “absolutely breathtaking,” called Underwood’s voice “the Voice of an Angel,” and wrote, “Carrie Underwood will always be the perfect person to tribute Dolly.”

Although “I Will Always Love You” became one of Parton’s signature songs, she originally wrote it as a goodbye to Porter Wagoner, the country singer who gave her a major career break by featuring her on his television variety show.

Known for his rhinestone suits and string of country hits, Wagoner became Parton’s mentor and frequent duet partner. The two released 13 duet albums together and won the Country Music Association Award for Vocal Duo of the Year three times.

But by 1974, Parton was ready to pursue a career on her own. She left Wagoner’s show, expressing her feelings through a song that would go on to become a country music standard.

Parton later performed the ballad for Wagoner again in 2007, honoring his 50th anniversary as a member of the Grand Ole Opry.

“If it hadn’t been for Porter, I wouldn’t have written this song,” Parton said at the time. “This is kind of my goodbye song to Porter.”

Whitney Houston gave the song a second life in 1992 with her recording for The Bodyguard soundtrack. The version became a global hit and helped make the ballad a lasting part of music history.

Since losing Parton in August, the music world has continued to honor her legacy, with artists including Brandi Carlile, Kacey Musgraves, Orville Peck and John Mayer performing the song.
