After the Gulf of America, President Donald Trump has set his sights on something bigger.
He says he asked Google to rename an entire ocean, and CEO Sundar Pichai said no. According to Business Insider, speaking at a rally in South Carolina on Wednesday, October 21, Trump told supporters he had discussed with the Google CEO the possibility of renaming the ocean after himself or America. The president, who has already pushed to rename the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Ontario, said the Google executive was unwilling to entertain another geographical change.
What Did Donald Trump Want to Rename the Atlantic Ocean?

— CBS News (@CBSNews) October 22, 2026Trump, 80, previously floated the names “Trump Ocean” and “Ocean of the Americas” while discussing the Atlantic and Pacific oceans at a Tennessee rally in early October.
He revisited the idea Wednesday, explaining that he had contacted Google’s chief executive about changing the Atlantic’s name on Google Maps. “I’m not going to put either Trump or America on any other ocean but these two,” Trump told the crowd, per Business Insider.
The president also praised Pichai and Google co-founder Sergey Brin, calling both executives “totally brilliant guys.”

Trump described his alleged conversation with Pichai, 54, during the rally. “Sundar, I’m thinking of the Atlantic Ocean. Can you handle it?” he recalled asking.
According to Trump, Pichai quickly objected. “No, no, no. This time I’m not doing it,” Trump quoted him as saying. “Oceans are different, sir. They cover really a lot of countries. Please don’t ask us to do that.”
Has Google Previously Changed Names at Trump’s Request?
Google Maps previously made two geographical name changes following Trump’s executive orders.
Following executive orders in January 2025 and August 2026, the Gulf of Mexico became the Gulf of America for U.S. users, while Lake Ontario was relabeled Lake America, BBC reported in August.
However, those changes were tied to updated federal geographical records rather than simply requests made to Google.
Canadian users continue seeing Lake Ontario on Google Maps, while users elsewhere may see both names.
Will Donald Trump Still Rename the Atlantic Ocean?
Despite raising the possibility of another name change, Trump indicated that he was prepared to abandon the idea. “So I’ll probably pass,” he told supporters. “Should I pass it?”
The president then appeared to settle the matter. “I think let’s keep it the Atlantic Ocean.”
For now, no one has formally announced a new name for the Atlantic, and Google Maps still identifies it by its longstanding name.
