Roseanne Barr Reveals How Much She Earned at the Height of ‘Roseanne’

Roseanne Barr revealed she was making Friends-level money well before the cast of Friends.

In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the former sitcom star said she received an extraordinarily high salary at the height of Roseanne, the groundbreaking ABC comedy she starred in from 1988 to 1997.

“I made $1 million an episode,” Barr, 73, told THR in October 2026, noting that she earned “Friends and Charlie Sheen-level money” before it was talked about in the media.

“No, I made a million way before them all in the ’90s,” Barr said of her status as the highest-paid star on television in the mid-1990s.

Friends ran from 1994 to 2004 on NBC. Midway through the series, stars Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer banded together to demand higher pay. In May 2000, MarketWatch reported that the cast struck a last-minute deal that would pay them $20 million per year— each. At the time, the cast’s move to negotiate salary as an inseparable unit was unprecedented.

In the new interview, Barr revealed what she did with her Roseanne earnings.

“I still got quite a bit of it,” she shared. “The rest of it, I had some divorces and some legal problems and I had some people help themselves to a lot of it. …I got a lot left. I ain’t hurting for money.”

In 2018, Barr starred in a short-lived reboot of Roseanne. According to Celebrity Net Worth, she was paid $2.25 million, or $250,000 for each episode of the nine-episode series, and was renewed for an additional $3.25 million for a follow-up season. But that season never came for Barr.

Following a social media scandal, Roseanne was canceled, and Barr’s character was killed off via an opioid overdose. The rest of the cast, which included John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf and Sara Gilbert, moved on to a spinoff, The Conners.

Barr said she wasn’t paid for anything when ABC decided to make The Conners spinoff.

“ABC demanded that they would only make [the show] if I were not [in it],” she shared. “And they called me and said, ‘You have a choice to make: You can sign off on letting us do a show without you [or everyone is out of a job.]”

She hinted that she was “tricked” into signing away her rights and was promised that the public would know that she “did it to save the jobs of the crew.”

Barr added that killing off her character with a drug overdose “was so insulting” on so many levels.

Barr is currently working on a new comedy titled Meemaw: A Modern Day Fable.
