Pope Leo XIV does not need any further treatment for lung cancer after testing confirmed the disease has not spread, according to an update from his doctors on Wednesday.
Testing on tissue from the lower lobe of Leo’s right lung that was removed during a surgery last week confirmed he had a pulmonary adenocarcinoma, the most common type of lung cancer, and that the disease was localized, according to a statement shared by the Vatican from Dr. Luigi Carbone and Prof. Stefano Margaritora regarding the Pope’s recovery and post-operative health plan.
“A subsequent oncological evaluation has confirmed that no further therapy is required,” the doctors said in the statement.
The pontiff was discharged from the hospital on Saturday after the surgery, and he was back at the Vatican the next day to lead the Angelus prayer.
Northwestern Medicine lung expert and board-certified thoracic surgeon Dr. Kalvin Lung, who has performed hundreds of surgeries similar to Pope Leo’s, said the surgery likely did three things: removed the tumor, removed the part of the lung that contained the tumor and removed the lymph nodes surrounding that part of the lung.
In all, it’s probable that approximately one-fifth to one quarter of the Pope’s right lung was removed, Lung said on an episode of “The Takeaway with Alex Maragos” where he explained the surgery, the diagnosis and the prognosis for the 71-year-old Pope.
