A suburban college student’s body was pulled from Lake Michigan early Wednesday morning just outside the campus where she went to school.
Police said a 911 caller reported seeing a person in the water around 7 a.m. near 70 Arts Circle Dr. in Evanston.
Rescuers responded to the scene and pulled an unresponsive woman from the water near Northwestern University’s southern lakefill area. The first responders attempted CPR and transported her onto a rescue boat and to a local hospital, but she was ultimately pronounced dead.
The woman, who was not from the Evanston area, was determined to be a Northwestern student and her death is now under investigation.
Police noted, however, that “there is no danger to the Northwestern or Evanston communities.”
“Lake Michigan can be dangerous. Hazard warnings and signs prohibiting swimming and fishing are posted along Northwestern University’s lakefront property,” police said in a release. “Evanston Police urge people to follow posted warnings, check lake conditions before approaching the water and follow instructions from city or university officials to stay out of the water and off break walls and rocks.”
Northwestern authorities said they also responded to the emergency and offered support for community members impacted by the death.
“Our thoughts are with the student’s family and friends,” the university said in a statement.
