Patriots Rule Out 5 Players Ahead of Bears Game

The New England Patriots are traveling to Chicago to take on the Bears at Soldier Field tomorrow night on Thursday Night Football. They’ll do so short-handed after head coach Mike Vrabel ruled out five players Wednesday afternoon.

As it was reported on Tuesday, offensive linemen Alijah Vera-Tucker (hamstring) and Ben Brown (knee) will not play against Chicago, putting the Pats down two starting offensive linemen. Additionally, cornerbacks Carlton Davis III (neck), Karon Printy (hamstring), and Channing Canada (hamstring) have also been ruled out, putting New England down three starters and two reserves before their final injury report of the week has even been released (and it was a long one on Tuesday).

Backup offensive linemen Matt Pryor and Walter Rouse will start for New England in their places if Vrabel’s estimation holds over the next 48 hours. Pryor (a former Chicago Bear) played 46 snaps on Sunday against the Jets and allowed one hurry and one quarterback pressure at right guard. Rouse played 14 snaps and allowed no pressures, but allowed four pressures, three hurries, and a sack in 41 snaps in Week 3 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Vrabel and the Pats were hopeful they would have Davis back this week after he missed Weeks 5 and 6 with a neck injury, and he was spotted on the New England practice field the past two days and listed as a limited participant on Tuesday’s injury report. But with the Thursday night contest creating a short turnaround for the Patriots, they’re going to give Davis another week to let the neck heal.

Cornerback Charles Woods will start in place of Davis on the outside, opposite Christian Gonzalez, tomorrow against the Bears. Canada would have been the next outside corner on the Pats’ depth chart, but he will be down too, leaving Elliott Davidson as the only other healthy outside cornerback on the roster right now. Marcus Jones starts at nickel and is backed up by former Bears Kindle Vildor.

In Davis’ place, Woods was solid against the Raiders and Jets, allowing three catches for 20 yards on seven targets in coverage. He didn’t allow a touchdown in coverage, and held Raiders and Jets quarterbacks to 47.9 and 22.9 opposing passer ratings allowed when targeted. However, in Weeks 3 and 4 against the Jaguars and Raiders (playing a rotational role before the Davis injury), he allowed opposing passer ratings of 118.8 and 156.3, with Josh Allen completing three of four passes his way for 34 yards and a touchdown.
