The new Willow Family Justice Center is designed to make it easier and faster for survivors to get help. The rates of domestic violence in Rochester and Monroe County are more than twice the statewide average.

“Just because you have an increase in domestic violence reports doesn’t mean you have an increase in domestic violence, it means that people are willing to come forward and get help,” Kelli Nicholas Owens, executive director of the New York State Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence, said.

And when they’re ready to do that, they’ll now be able to start here at the Willow Family Justice Center.

“It is a response that we know works for survivors and also for those who are trying to help survivors and really bringing people together into one spot so they can coordinate services and the response to the domestic violence,” Owens said. “The Family Justice Centers are a models that are used in number of areas of the state, not all of them but we’re really looking to expand coordinated community response,” Owens said.

Shaughnessey Denson survived a violent attack by her ex-husband and said Willow helped her rebuild her life from scratch.

“I actually had to start from scratch I had to build my life from scratch starting with housing and that was one of the things that Willow was able to help me with. They connected me with another local group who was able to provide me with security deposit to move into a new place. there was also another program where they provided household items, blankets pots pans, dishes,” Denson said.

Denson has been working with the team at Willow to ensure this new center has everything survivors might need to get help and/or start over.

“I think it’s really important that our voices are heard, that survivors speak up and share their stories,” Denson said.

Willow’s shelters for survivors will remain at confidential locations, but most other services will be offered at the new secure center.

Willow Domestic Violence Center offers a confidential hotline at 222-SAFE, emergency shelter, counseling and legal support. Live chat with an advocate is also available. If in immediate danger, always call 911.
