Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams had one of the best games of his career on Sunday, and he took inspiration from a Hollywood icon.
Williams went 30-for-36 for 305 yards and a touchdown in Sunday’s win over the Atlanta Falcons, putting together not just the best passing percentage of his career, but also the best completion percentage of any Bears quarterback with at least 30 pass attempts in a game.
That accuracy helped the Bears in a big way on Sunday, and Williams shared some unlikely inspiration for his performance.
Leading up to the game, which was Williams’ first with the Bears in three weeks, he had changed his Instagram profile picture to one of John Wick, the iconic assassin portrayed by Keanu Reeves in a hit series of movies.
In an interview with NBC’s Maria Taylor, Williams said he used Wick’s “mindset” to help him prepare for his game.
“I was watching ‘John Wick’ for this week, a couple of his movies I watched,” he said. “The mindset of him is what it was, and why it was my profile. I am inevitable. That is my mentality every single day I get to live and breathe.”
Apparently the Iceman’s admiration of Wick and of Reeves is mutual, as someone close in Williams’ orbit heard from the superstar actor.
“He actually reached out which was really cool,” he said. “He just reached out and said he was a fan.”
While Williams said he didn’t interact with Reeves directly, he did say he would have certainly have acted a bit more starstruck if he’d been the one texting with the actor.
“I was so locked in I didn’t fully read into it,” he said.
Williams and the Bears will be back in action Thursday when they face the New England Patriots at Soldier Field, with kickoff set for 7:20 p.m.
