The Denver Broncos – Kansas City Chiefs Week 8 game likely won’t be flexed to Sunday Night Football.
Though, that ultimately is up to the NFL.
Currently the Washington Commanders and Philadelphia Eagles — two struggling teams — are going head-to-head on SNF in two weeks.
Denver Broncos – Kansas City Chiefs Week 8 game unlikely to be flexed to SNF
This week, the Denver Broncos fly to Arizona to battle the Cardinals before returning home to the Mile High City and host the undefeated Kansas City Chiefs.
That Week 8 Sunday Night Football game is headlined by the Commanders vs. the Eagles. It might’ve looked like a solid matchup before the season, but both teams are terrible right now.
Philadelphia was supposed to be a contender once again, but not only are they 2-4, they just lost quarterback Jalen Hurts for the season once blood clots were discovered in his lungs. In a wild note, he had to stay awake and then played the game in London against the Jaguars.
So, the league likely doesn’t want that storyline repeated multiple times during the broadcast.
On the other side, the Commanders have bungled away two straight games with terrible execution late. Many have called for head coach Dan Quinn’s job.
But those type of bad games are exactly why the league is able to flex games out and into Sunday Night Football.
In Week 8, there are two good-to-great games which could work in that SNF spot.
One is the Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Cleveland Browns. Both teams are currently 4-2 and in a three-way tie for first in the AFC North with the Baltimore Ravens.
The other possibility is the Chiefs – Broncos game on Sunday, Nov. 1. The Chiefs are undefeated at 5-0 and Denver just improved to 4-2.
NFL rules will block the AFC West flex
The Chiefs face the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday Night Football this week.
That seems like enough reason to not feature Kansas City on SNF in Week 8, or on back-to-back Sundays.
But that’s not why Chiefs – Broncos won’t be on SNF in Week 8.
According to Pro Football Talk, an NFL rule says these home-and-home games must be on Sunday afternoon.
“By rule, at least one game of a home-and-home division rivalry must be televised on Sunday afternoon.”
Both the Steelers-Browns, and Broncos-Chiefs were already played on prime time. Denver’s was in Week 1, kicking of the year’s Monday Night Football slate.
However, Mike Florio of PFT did add, “It’s ultimately the league’s decision.”
The NFL has until tonight to decide if the Chiefs-Broncos Week 8 game will be flexed to SNF or not.
Kansas City could be 6-0; the Seahawks are reeling right now. Although, Seattle will undoubtedly be hungry to get a win this Sunday.
Meanwhile, the Broncos have a seemingly easy opponent in Arizona. However, the Cards just beat the LA Rams 18-16 last Sunday. They’re currently 2-4 on the year while Denver is 4-2.
If the Broncos win, they’ll improve to 5-2 and the Chiefs will either be 5-1 or 6-0. That seems like a dream SNF game.
We’ll know later today if the game will stay at 2:25 p.m. MT on Nov. 1 or move to a 6:20 p.m. MT kickoff.
