Bruce Willis Is “Not Aware There’s an Issue,” Says Kevin Pollak

Joy and heartbreak were both delivered in equal measure in Kevin Pollak’s description of Bruce Willis today. Speaking with host Steve Kmetko on the Still Here Hollywood podcast, Pollak said the actor is surrounded by family and, “because of the nature of this affliction he’s not aware that there’s an issue.”

Willis’ family announced in February 2023 that he has frontotemporal dementia. In January, his wife, Emma Heming Willis, said on a podcast that he has anosognosia, a condition in which the brain cannot recognize its own decline. “It’s not denial,” she said.

Pollak described the world Willis lives in as “a bubble of love and affection,” with the children he has with Demi Moore and with his wife all close by. “In a very strange unique way, he’s as happy as he’s ever been,” Pollak said. “I mean, it’s heartbreaking. So rather than crying, I’m laughing at the sort of simple sweet irony of a thriving beast of a man.”

Pollak knew Willis at full strength. He appeared alongside him in The Whole Nine Yards, its sequel The Whole Ten Yards and Hostage. Working with him, Pollak said, “at times it felt like what it must have been like to hang out with Elvis Presley,” because Willis was “larger than life.” Where other major stars bring an entourage, Pollak said, Willis’ base camp was staffed by “lifelong friends,” including a right-hand man who once tended bar with him in New York and remains in that role today.

The memories reach back to A Few Good Men, the 1992 courtroom drama in which Pollak played Sam Weinberg and Moore, then married to Willis, starred. Willis was shooting Death Becomes Her on the next soundstage, Pollak recalled, and the crew knew where to find him. “Not in his trailer,” Pollak said. He was “loitering on our sound stage to be with his wife.”

One day, Pollak said, a friend visiting the set stood behind Willis and director Rob Reiner during a take of a scene between Pollak and Tom Cruise. Willis leaned over and whispered, “I feel like I’m watching Spencer Tracy. This guy’s doing nothing and I can’t take my eyes off him.” Pollak called it “one of the greatest feedbacks I’d ever received in my life.”

The two families have stayed close. Pollak said he spent time with Willis and his family at their Idaho compound, where Willis and Moore, by then divorced, kept giant homes across the street from each other so the kids would not have far to go. He called it “a camp of love at all times as a family and a family man.”

“I’ve been around a lot of big stars over the years,” Pollak said. “And his magnetism was unmatched.”

The Willis family has said it hopes attention to his condition can bring more awareness and research to frontotemporal dementia, a disease with no current treatments.
