After several long months of swimming, Catherine Breed became the first person in history to swim California’s entire 900-mile coast on Sunday, having started the journey over three months ago on July 1.
Breed averaged more than 10 miles a day in the open water, swimming past the kelp forests in Monterey Bay and the Golden Gate Bridge.
Though she is the lone swimmer to have ever completed this super-marathon swim, or event attempt, for that matter, the project itself. named “Swim California” involved several members of a team alongside Breed, including a pacer who would help supply her with protein shakes, as well as a crew on a 52-foot sailboat that would set up land along with Breed on her journey down the coastline.
“For months, I measured my world in the next few miles,” Breed said in a San Francisco Chronicle report. “Every message from someone following along, every person who came out to cheer, helped me get back in the water.”
Throughout the swim, Breed has engaged with communities along the coast, helping raise awareness for ocean conservation needs along the Pacific coast. Breed fell in love with the coast, which led her to create Sea Dreamers, a nonprofit that creates opportunities for people to enjoy the ocean and protect it.
“I saw whales beneath me, plastic beside me, and communities giving their time to look after these places,” Breed said in a San Francisco Chronicle report. “I hope people who followed this journey choose one place they love and find a way to take care of it.”
Breed had a notable wildlife encounter earlier this month on her journey; in a video from shark documentarian Carlos Gauna, also known as The Malibu Artist on YouTube, joined Breed on the 89th day of her swim, documenting behind-the-scenes footage of one of the 10-mile stretches.
Several yards from Breed’s boat, a drone captured footage of a juvenile great white shark. After the day’s swim, the team went back out to look for more sharks and spotted three different great white sharks in 20 minutes.

Breed hit the halfway point of the swim in late August, reportedly a week ahead of schedule.
She hasn’t posted anything to her Instagram since the swim ended. However, she shared a heartfelt message to her supporters with only two and a half miles left to complete on day 110, saying that in most instances, these long open water swims can end in a lonely finish, though she has felt “special” having been able to do this alongside so many people.
Day 110. 1 day left, less than 2.5 miles, the victory lap.
Tomorrow is a day planned for the team and my friends and family that got me to not only the finish line but the start line all the way back on July 1st. It is our celebration together because I couldn’t imagine finishing this swim and not being able to give them a hug.
Marathon swim finishes are typically very lonely and it feels so special to have been able to plan this one with so many of you. Thank you again for being part of this journey.
