Russell’s Singapore triumph carried a hidden burden

George Russell has revealed that his triumphant 2025 Singapore Grand Prix weekend was overshadowed by personal challenges away from the circuit, with the Mercedes driver admitting that his pole position and victory came at a time when his mind was “quite busy”.

More than a year later, the Briton has offered a glimpse into what made that success so meaningful, while keeping the nature of his private struggles firmly under wraps.

Speaking to Austrian broadcaster ORF Sport, Russell was shown photographs of himself celebrating his Marina Bay victory alongside his partner, Carmen Montero Mundt. The images prompted a revealing admission.

"I mean, it was a very special weekend because there was a lot going on behind the scenes that not many people know about,” he said.

Asked to provide a hint about what he had been dealing with, Russell remained tight-lipped.

    "No, one day."

More than just a race victory

Russell subsequently explained why those photographs captured something particularly important to him. While the outside world saw a driver at the top of his game, the reality behind the scenes was considerably more complicated.

"Psychologically, my brain was quite busy," Russell added. "Then going out, putting it on pole, winning the race was a really special moment and having Carmen there as well.

"Why these photos and this moment were so important to me is because she was there through those moments off the track that I was dealing with, so this is the part that people don't see."

The victory was Russell's second of the 2025 season and a particularly satisfying result at a circuit that had previously brought him heartbreak. In 2023, he crashed on the final lap while running third, throwing away a likely podium finish.

Two years later, he delivered a commanding performance, securing pole position before converting it into victory. His latest comments suggest that the achievement carried a personal significance far beyond the sporting result.

Russell keeps fighting despite title deficit

Russell's challenges in 2026 are rather more public. He currently occupies second place in the drivers' standings with 238 points, trailing Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli by 102 points. Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton sits third on 229.

Speaking last month in Baku, Russell insisted he would continue pushing regardless of the championship arithmetic.

"I'm going to keep fighting every single race until it's mathematically impossible," Russell told the media.

"It doesn't change how I go about my job. I want to try and win every single race and put it on pole every single race.

"That's my goal. That's what I'm working towards every single weekend and what happens thereafter will be. There's obviously a huge deficit, but it's not even a consideration right now. The performance is the biggest priority.

"I don't think I was really putting pressure on myself before from a championship standpoint. I was putting pressure on myself from a performance perspective. I'm in this position in the championship because the performance hasn't been strong enough.

"It's been the case for a while where the pressure has come from trying to improve the performance, rather than thinking I need to fight for this championship because you can only fight for a championship if you've got the performance."

Russell has yet to reveal exactly what weighed on him in Singapore. For now, the full story behind that memorable weekend remains untold.
