Mariners Had Interest In Carlos Mendoza For Managerial Opening

Former Mets manager Carlos Mendoza was hired by the Phillies to be their third base coach earlier this week. Philadelphia wasn’t the only team pursuing him, though. Jorge Castillo of ESPN reports that Mendoza was in the mix for the Mariners’ managerial vacancy. He withdrew his name to take the job with the Phillies.

New York fired Mendoza in late June. The club was 13 games under .500 at the time. He remained a coaching free agent through the end of the season. Mendoza is stepping in for Anthony Contreras as Philly’s third base coach. He’ll also serve as the team’s infield coach.

Seattle is the only team without a skipper right now. Philadelphia was briefly on the list, but the organization signed Don Mattingly to a two-year deal. Mattingly had been promoted from bench coach to interim manager in April after Rob Thomson was fired.

Dan Wilson has helmed the Mariners for the past two and a half seasons. He led the club to a 90-win campaign in his first full year in 2025. Seattle won the AL West and reached the postseason for just the second time since 2001. The 2026 season didn’t go as smoothly. The Mariners were 10 games under .500 and finished third in an underwhelming division. Wilson told reporters on the final day of the regular season that he wouldn’t be returning in 2027.

After Wilson’s departure, reports emerged that the Mariners wanted an experienced manager. Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo was cited as a potential candidate, though he’s since re-upped with Arizona. Mendoza isn’t a grizzled coaching veteran, but he would’ve at least had more manager reps than Seattle’s previous options. Wilson hadn’t managed in the big leagues before getting the gig. Neither had Scott Servais, who spent eight years in the role ahead of Wilson.

With Mendoza and Lovullo off the market, the only known candidate for Seattle’s vacancy is former Astros manager Joe Espada. The team received permission to interview Espada on Tuesday, a day before the official announcement that his contract with Houston wouldn’t be renewed. Espada led the Astros to two division titles in three seasons. They were ousted in the Wild Card round both times.
