Chicago Bears hang on after Atlanta Falcons comeback attempt falls short

The Chicago Bears nearly watched a 24-point lead evaporate in the fourth quarter, but they held on for a 31-23 win over the Atlanta Falcons Sunday.

Caleb Williams threw for 305 yards and a touchdown, and D’Andre Swift had two rushing touchdowns as the Bears moved to 4-2 on the season.

Appearing in his first game in three weeks, Williams got straight to work, completing his first six passes on the team’s opening drive, including a 14-yard touchdown pass to Colston Loveland that put Chicago ahead 7-0.

The Bears’ defense forced the Falcons off the field with a three-and-out, and the offense surged forward again, with Swift collecting a touchdown run to give the Bears a 14-0 lead with a minute remaining in the first quarter.

Atlanta’s offense finally got things going a bit with a short field, with Jahan Dotson snaring a touchdown catch, but the Bears got it right back with Swift’s second touchdown run of the game with 1:26 remaining in the second quarter, giving Chicago a 21-7 lead at halftime.

The third quarter once again belonged to the Bears, with Roschon Johnson scoring on a four-yard run late in the third quarter to give Chicago a 28-7 lead.

After a Santos field goal to start the fourth quarter, the Bears had a 31-7 lead in the fourth quarter of the game, but Ben Johnson made a controversial decision to pull some of his defensive starters from the contest, and Atlanta responded immediately.

An eight-play, 91-yard drive ended with Kyle Pitts hauling in a touchdown catch, and after Roschon Johnson fumbled away the ball on the next Bears drive the Falcons scored again, with Pitts grabbing his second touchdown catch of the quarter to cut Chicago’s lead to 31-23 with 5:41 remaining.

Fortunately for Johnson and the Bears, the defense stiffened on Atlanta’s next possession, with Gordon stripping the ball away from Penix and the Bears recovering, allowing them to run a significant chunk of time off the block in Falcons territory.

The Bears won’t have much time to rest after the game, as they’ll face the New England Patriots at Soldier Field on Thursday night.
