Jeff Garlin has a hilarious memory of his late friend Diane Keaton, but it comes with a warning: Never get in the car with her.
The Curb Your Enthusiasm actor, 64, recently looked back on his longtime friendship with Keaton during an Oct. 13 appearance on Ted Danson‘s Where Everybody Knows Your Name podcast. While remembering the late Oscar winner, who died at 79 on Oct. 11, 2025, Garlin revealed that she had one particularly memorable flaw behind the wheel.
“The one thing: the worst driver,” he joked.
Garlin explained that his friendship with Keaton grew out of her close relationship with his ex-wife, Marla Garlin. The former couple, who divorced in 2017 after 23 years of marriage, had two sons, James and Duke. Keaton’s son, also named Duke, became best friends with their son.
The families spent plenty of time together over the years, including at least 15 Thanksgivings, according to Garlin. And their holiday traditions sometimes included a trip to the movies after dinner.
That’s when Keaton’s driving apparently became a memorable part of the experience.
“I remember, we’re all in Palm Springs, and one of the things we did was, after Thanksgiving dinner, we went to the movies,” Garlin recalled. “And many times I found myself sitting next to Diane.”
The problem wasn’t the movie. It was getting there.
“She drove like a scene out of Annie Hall. It was insane,” Garlin said, referencing Keaton’s Oscar-winning 1977 romantic comedy. “And I had my seatbelt on, I was grabbing onto the seat, and I just laughed even though I was scared sh—less.”
Apparently, Keaton’s driving could turn an ordinary family outing into an adventure of its own.
Despite the frightening car rides, Garlin spoke warmly about his relationship with the actress, who was best known for Annie Hall, The Godfather films, and her collaborations with director Woody Allen. He said Keaton was gracious when he asked her questions about her Hollywood career and recalled how vulnerable she could be during their conversations.
Keaton died from pneumonia, according to a statement from her family. A year after her death, Garlin’s story offers a funny glimpse into the everyday moments that made their friendship special — even if he may have preferred to take a separate car.
