In honor of National Pasta Day on Oct. 17, a new survey is revealing some surprising facts about Americans’ pasta-eating habits, including a little secret some home cooks have been keeping.
According to the 2026 Pasta Night Report from Rosina Food Products, 34% of Americans surveyed admit they’ve served store-bought frozen filled pasta and let others believe it was homemade.
The survey, which polled 1,009 U.S. adults in September 2026, also revealed which pasta dishes and sauces Americans prefer, how often they turn to frozen pasta for an easy dinner and one controversial condiment most respondents agree has no place on pasta.
When it comes to which sauce Americans are pouring over their pasta, marinara wins with 44% of the vote. Alfredo is the favorite of 31% of respondents, while 8% prefer vodka sauce. As for whether diners prefer cheese-stuffed pasta or classic noodles, the votes were nearly split, with 49% choosing cheese-stuffed pasta and 51% preferring classic.
Spaghetti is still king when it comes to pasta preferences, with 40% of survey-takers choosing it as their favorite. Stuffed shells received 15% of the vote, while ravioli came in at 14%. And it seems meatballs are a big part of pasta night, too: 68% of respondents say meatballs come to mind when they think about pasta dinners.
Frozen pasta is also helping Americans get dinner on the table. According to the survey, 62% of respondents say frozen pasta helps them manage busy weeknights, 47% always keep it stocked in their freezers and 32% say frozen filled pasta is a regular staple in their homes.
And despite the fact that it’s made with tomatoes, Americans seem to agree that putting ketchup on pasta is a major no-no. A whopping 86% of respondents say the condiment has no place on pasta.
