Miley Cyrus will always love her late godmother, Dolly Parton.
According to People, the Hannah Montana alum honored the legendary country singer during her Hollywood Bowl show on Oct. 16 with an emotional rendition of “Jolene.” Cyrus teared up prior to performing the song, which she introduced by sharing a special memory of watching her “Aunt Dolly” perform live at the iconic venue from the crowd for the first time.
Cyrus remembered asking Parton if she could experience her show like one of her fans, The Hollywood Reporter reported. Parton said, “Okay Miley,” but Cyrus knew better than to take her word for it. She surprised Cyrus by opening her show with a cover of the Hannah Montana theme song, “The Best of Both Worlds.” Parton then informed the crowd that “my goddaughter is Hannah Montana, and she’s actually here tonight, but she’s sitting out in her seat.”
Cyrus didn’t understand Parton’s shoutout at the time. Now, she appreciates the memory—and her enduring bond with the late country singer—more than ever.
“Me and Dolly, we are eternal. Nothing in this life could tear us apart,” Cyrus told the crowd. “And I’m gonna see her again. I can’t f*cking wait because I miss her. Some of the greatest music that we have today was written, produced and performed by my Aunt Dolly.”
Later, when performing “Wrecking Ball,” Cyrus held a photo of her late godmother in a heart-shaped frame. She told the audience that the 2013 hit was Parton’s favorite track of Cyrus’, “so I had to bring her with me.”
Parton died on Aug. 25 after “a brief battle with cancer,” a representative for the singer confirmed in a statement to People at the time. She was 80 years old. Cyrus shared a tribute remembering her “most sacred moments” with Parton on Instagram.
