Hyundai Genesis represents value

The Hyundai Genesis G70 is making strides in the luxury sport sedan segment and debuts its Prestige Graphite trim this year.

It contrasts the larger G80 with its sport tuned suspension providing a lower center of gravity, better handling and an elegant stitched interior.

Two powerplants are available this year — a 300 horsepower 2.5-liter turbocharged four cylinder and a twin turbo 365 hp 3.3-liter V6. The latter was packed into our test car for a week of exhilarating performance.

The Genesis is no cheap date with a base price of $44-50,000 for the smaller engine and 55-60,000 for the Prestige package.

At our independent test track, the tester reached 60 mph in a respectable 4.4 seconds compared with 5.8 seconds with the smaller engine. Each is mated with a smooth-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission.

While SUVs outnumber sedans and coupes on the road, we found the G70 strikes a happy balance with reliable build quality up against long-time rivals’ BMW 3 Series, Lexus IS350, Audi A4 and Mecedes-Benz C Class — good company.

Shortcomings include a tight fit for rear seat passengers and a tiny 10.5 cubic foot trunk. Fortunately, the G70 has useful locations to store smaller items.

On the flip side, the G70 interior is posh with a standard 10.25 infotainment screen. Instead of having to drill down to adjust climate, entertainment and navigation, the controls are mostly flip switches, knobs or push button unlike irritating touch controls on some rivals Nappa leather with orange stitching abounds and a micro-fiber suede headliner adds a nice touch in our top-of-the-line tester. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are wireless and our sedan came with a useful heads-up display and upgraded Lexicon premium sound system with a 15-speaker concert hall experience.

Although it doesn’t have the roominess of an SUV, we found the G70 a fun car to drive around town, easy to park and attractive to bystanders.

Depending on pedal pressure, the G70 will deliver near instant torque, oftentimes without the need for a downshift although that maneuver will add additional thrust. Our tester included a limited slip differential, Brembo brakes and a variable exhaust system for those occasional performance runs.

Cornering maneuvers are accomplished with ease from its all-wheel drive system configured in Sport or Sport Plus mode. It can send up to 80% of its power to the rear wheels for aggressive driving with high amounts of wheel traction.

Driver assistance safety features give the G70 added protection with front and rear automatic emergency braking, intersection collision avoidance, lane keeping assist, blind spot monitoring, side cross-traffic alert and the many aspects of adaptive cruise control.

There is a price to pay at the pump for all that the G70 has to offer. EPA estimates combined fuel use at 19 miles per gallon while rivals do better.

Since going on sale here in 2019, the first generation G70 continues to offer value but has not fully kept up with advances from European rivals.
