UNC Sports: Field Hockey, Men’s Soccer, Volleyball All Earn ACC Wins

It was a successful Friday evening for multiple UNC sports teams, as the field hockey, men’s soccer and volleyball squads each earned big wins in ACC action.

In field hockey, the Tar Heels returned home to Karen Shelton Stadium for the first time in almost a month and celebrated the occasion with a 4-0 win against Boston College. In a dominating performance, UNC limited the Eagles to just four total shots, compared to Carolina’s 20. Charly Bruder scored the breakthrough goal midway through the second quarter, giving the Tar Heels a 1-0 lead at halftime.

Ella Barbacci and Ryleigh Heck each scored in the third quarter, and Dani Mendez – who was one of three field hockey athletes, along with Heck, who were reinstated to the team earlier in the season thanks to an eligibility ruling in court – added UNC’s fourth goal of the game in the fourth quarter. It was also Mendez’s first goal of the season.

The 4-0 win marked Carolina’s fourth shutout win in its last five games, with the only blemish being a 2-1 loss at No. 17 Liberty last Sunday. The Tar Heels have won five of their last six games since falling below .500 at 3-4 and out of the national rankings. Now 8-5 overall and 4-1 in ACC play, UNC will return to action when it hosts No. 13 Syracuse in Chapel Hill Sunday at 2 p.m.

In men’s soccer, the red-hot Tar Heels kept the good times rolling by traveling to No. 7 Pittsburgh and, like their field hockey counterparts, dominating possession on their way to a 1-0 win. Max Fisher was the goalscorer for Carolina, netting his first goal as a Tar Heel in the 51st minute to break a scoreless tie. It had been all UNC before that, as Carolina limited Pitt to just one total shot in the first 45 minutes. Tar Heel keeper Alan Rutkowski saved the Panthers’ only shot on target of the night in the 70th minute.

UNC has now won five matches in a row to rocket up the ACC standings. Following Friday’s result, the team’s first ranked win of the season, the Tar Heels sit fourth in the conference table with 11 points — just one behind second place Clemson and Wake Forest. Carolina is 7-2-3 overall and 3-1-2 in ACC play. During its five-match winning streak, the team has outscored the opposition 16-3. Up next, the Tar Heels will visit Duke in Durham Friday, Oct. 23 at 8 p.m.

The Tar Heel volleyball team extended its own winning streak Friday with a road sweep at Notre Dame. Carolina came out on the front foot, winning eight of the match’s first 10 points to establish a strong lead in the opening set. UNC closed strong from there, with a Chelsea Thorpe kill clinching the 25-15 win.

The second and third sets were much more competitive, with each requiring extra points. The Fighting Irish led from the very first point of the second set into the middle stages, taking an 18-12 lead before head coach Mike Schall called timeout. The stoppage worked wonders, as the Tar Heels won the next seven points to flip the set on its head and take a 19-18 lead. The Irish would nose back in front at 23-22 and then hold set point at 24-23, but UNC came back strong by winning the next two points to earn a set point of its own. After Notre Dame saved set points at 25-24 and 26-25, Addison West and Safi Hampton finally slammed the door shut by teaming up for a block at the net to clinch at 28-26 win and move to within a set of the match win.

It was the Tar Heels who started the stronger in the third set, leading 7-4 and not letting the Irish in front until the late stages. Notre Dame won three consecutive points to take a 22-21 lead and again held set point at 24-23. But once again, UNC came through in the clutch: Jackie Taylor saved the set point with a kill before a Notre Dame error gave Carolina its own set point at 25-24. Thorpe worked her magic again, combining with Lauren Schutter for the match-winning block.

UNC’s win, its eight in a row, sets up an important ACC showdown Sunday. The Tar Heels, who are 12-3 overall and 7-0 in conference play, will travel to No. 3 Louisville to face the Cardinals at 1 p.m., with the winner moving into sole possession of first place in the standings. Louisville is the only other unbeaten team in league play this season.
