Scotland fast bowler Brad Wheal has announced his retirement from the game of cricket at the age of 30 on Friday (October 16). The Durban-born pacer has decided to end his 10-year career because of the recurring injuries, including a stress fracture of the spine and multiple shoulder surgeries.
Wheal made his debut for Scotland in 2016 when he was just 19 years old. The Hampshire pacer went on to become an important member of Scotland's bowling attack and represented his country in several ICC tournaments, including four T20 World Cups. Amid this, Aneurin Donald set for BBL debut after white-ball series in Australia.
Brad Wheal said that he has enjoyed playing for Hampshire and Scotland, but repeated injuries have forced him to retire from the game. The fast bowler revealed that he has suffered four stress fractures in his back and recently undergone knee surgery. He feels his body can no longer handle the pressure of fast bowling, although retiring was not an easy decision for him.
Brad Wheal said in an official statement: “I’ve loved my time at Hampshire and representing Scotland as a professional cricketer, but unfortunately, recurring injuries have forced my hand, and I’ve made the decision to retire from playing cricket. It’s not been an easy decision, but one I am at peace with. I’ve had four stress fractures in my back and recently had surgery on my knee, and ultimately my body can’t cope with the demands of fast bowling anymore.”

He thanked his teammates, coaches, support staff, and Scotland fans for their support throughout his career. Wheal signed off by saying, “I’m incredibly thankful to all my teammates, coaches, and support staff who I’ve worked with over the years.

It’s been a huge part of my career and something I’ll always look back on with really fond memories. I’ll certainly be following the boys closely and supporting them from afar.”
