Why are fans still so deeply invested in the ups and downs of the Sister Wives family?
One of the show’s fan-favorite cast members just laid out the real reason on Instagram, dropping a candid assessment of the fandom that couldn’t be more accurate. Addressing her followers in a viral new Instagram video, Mykelti Brown Padron, daughter of Christine Brown Woolley and Kody Brown, reflected on the sprawling TLC series and why millions of viewers remain fiercely loyal week after week.
Unpacking the dual nature of the show’s massive viewer base, she hilariously admitted that people tune in for two distinct reasons. Either they show love and support to her mothers (Christine, Meri Brown, and Janelle Brown), or they vent their collective frustration by screaming at her dad.
Padron played two roles in the video clip: herself and a friend who knew nothing about the show. During this back-and-forth, she exposed the dynamic that keeps viewers hooked as the show rolls out Season 21.

View this post on InstagramThe clip was titled “Explaining Sister Wives.” Padron, who played both roles began, “My family’s a TV show.” Her “friend” responded, “Like the Kardashians?”
“Kind of, if the Kardashians all shared one husband,” Padron explained. “Okay, so it’s the one guy and his sister wives,” she responded.
“They aren’t sisters, and they aren’t really wives anymore,” the reality star continued. “Three of them actually left and now, there’s one wife.”
She continued, “It’s called Sister Wives, brand recognition.” The other character asked, “But he was married to all of them?”

Padron corrected: “Legally, only one at a time. He divorced the first one to marry the fourth one. The fourth one is canon, and the others are spiritual.”
It was then that the other character asked the question fans want answered, “Why do they keep filming?”
“Half the fans watch my moms. The other half of the fans watch to yell at my dad. Either way, TLC gets paid. The biggest story was eight years fighting over a pile of dirt.” The “pile of dirt” was the Brown family’s purchase of a plot of land called Coyote Pass, where they were supposed to build homes for their entire family to live upon, with enough space for future generations to live if they so chose.
Fans found the banter hilarious. They shared their remarks in the post’s comments section.
“8 years of fighting over a pile of dirt. I watch for both reasons, and will keep watching. But I have to admit, I’ll miss yelling at your dad (and number four),” wrote one follower.
A second viewer penned, “Lowkey, I was watching to support your moms and see how long it took for Robyn and Kody to be fired. Now I just watch to support your moms, obviously lolol.”
“It was 8 years of adults that couldn’t figure out what 14/4 was. Actually it REALLY should’ve been 14/3 because Kody & Robyn were one household,” claimed a third Instagram user.
A fourth TLC viewer summed up the feeling of many viewers over the years. They wrote, “I used to tell my husband, “I can’t wait for these kids to grow up and start talking.” You DO NOT DISAPPOINT!”
Sister Wives Season 21 is currently airing on TLC, Sundays at 10 p.m. ET.
