Williams is preparing to celebrate half a century of Formula 1 history in style, with a spectacular London exhibition, a fan-designed British Grand Prix livery and a special chassis designation among the highlights of its 2027 anniversary programme.
But while the celebrations will shine a spotlight on the achievements that established Williams as one of the sport’s most successful teams, the occasion will also carry a sporting significance.
The Grove-based outfit faces a massive year in 2027, tasked with honouring its illustrious past while attempting to recover from a disappointing 2026 campaign and restore its fortunes on the track.
Only Ferrari and McLaren have previously reached the milestone of 50 consecutive years in Formula 1, placing Williams in rare company as it prepares to mark its golden anniversary.
Team principal James Vowles believes the occasion offers an opportunity not only to revisit the team's remarkable achievements but also to reconnect with the generations of supporters who will shape its future.
“It is incredible to think that over 100 F1 teams have come and gone since Frank Williams built this team from next to nothing with a determination to race and win against motorsport’s powerhouses,” said Vowles.
“That independence, passion and relentless will to win remain in our DNA as we enter our 50th year.
“Our celebrations will reintroduce the heroes and stories that have forged Williams’ legacy to a new generation of fans, who will carry us forward to reach new heights.”
London showpiece and a special FW50
The centrepiece of Williams' anniversary celebrations will be W50 Live, an immersive experience opening in Waterloo, London, at the start of 2027.
Designed as a multi-sensory journey through the team's history, the exhibition will bring together championship-winning machinery, iconic memorabilia and stories from a remarkable journey that began with Frank Williams and co-founder Patrick Head.
The team's origins trace back to a London railway arch, where Williams discovered Head working in a garage more than five decades ago.
That partnership eventually produced a Formula 1 powerhouse whose trophy cabinet boasts nine Constructors' Championships, seven Drivers' titles and 114 Grand Prix victories.

Visitors will be able to get close to some of the machines that helped define those achievements, including the FW06, the first chassis built by Williams Grand Prix Engineering, and the dominant FW14B that carried Nigel Mansell to the 1992 world championship.
The exhibition will also showcase Williams' 2027 challenger, which will carry the designation FW50.
The name represents a deliberate break from the team's usual sequential numbering, with Williams jumping directly from the current FW48 to mark the anniversary – a move reminiscent of its transition from the FW38 to the FW40 for its 40th birthday in 2017.
Fans to shape Silverstone celebrations
Williams is also handing supporters a direct role in its anniversary festivities by allowing them to choose the team's livery for the 2027 British Grand Prix at Silverstone.
Few venues could provide a more fitting backdrop. Silverstone has witnessed several landmark moments in Williams' history, including Clay Regazzoni's breakthrough victory in 1979, the team's first in Formula 1, and Jacques Villeneuve's 100th Grand Prix win in 1997.
The fan-selected design will give supporters an opportunity to leave their own mark on the celebrations, turning a home race already rich in Williams history into a special tribute to five decades of competition.
The programme will extend beyond the track and exhibition hall, with limited-edition merchandise and collectible releases planned around the commemorative W50 logo. Williams says further anniversary initiatives will be announced in the months ahead.
Formula 1 president and CEO Stefano Domenicali welcomed the milestone, highlighting the team's enduring place in the championship's story.
“It is incredible to celebrate 50 years of Williams in Formula 1.
“Sir Frank Williams built one of the defining teams in our sport, founded on determination, resilience and an uncompromising desire to succeed. Those values continue to inspire the team today as it writes the next chapter of its remarkable story.

Next season, the Grove-based outfit’s FW50 will carry a heavy symbolic burden, representing both the legacy of a team that once dominated Formula 1 and its determination to reclaim a place closer to the front.
