Michael Che Addresses Shane Gillis ‘SNL’ Controversy During Tense Interview

After a recent episode of Saturday Night Live, Shane Gillis faced criticism for his remarks about women’s gym attire. During his seven-minute opening monologue, Gillis said, “I haven’t been to the gym in so long I didn’t know women just dress like whores now.”

The comment was met with both laughter and groans, prompting Gillis to continue.

“I’m sorry, there’s no other way to describe it,” he said. “Have you seen it? I’ve seen it. The shorts. Have you seen the shorts?”

After the controversial episode, Michael Che appeared on the Today show on Oct. 15 for what became a tense conversation.

Che, known for his role on SNL’s Weekend Update, spoke with Laura Jarrett to discuss his new stand-up special, Michael Che: Shot in Minnesota. Jarrett brought up an Instagram post from Che, where the comedian said, “Gotta do more press this week to promote the special. Wonder what every f-king questions gonna be about. Thanks a lot Shane.”

“That’s comedy, you think it’s funny and then some people don’t,” Che said of Gillis’ opening monologue.

Jarrett asked if Che laughed at what Gillis said, and Che replied, “I was at cue cards, actually, thinking about what I was gonna say that was gonna make people upset. So I wasn’t really — I didn’t even see it ‘til the next day.”

Jarrett continued to press Che about the controversy.

“I didn’t think about it honestly,” he said.

Jarrett asked if Che had seen the monologue with the distasteful remarks before it aired.

“There’s so much going on. It’s really hard to see what everyone’s doing, you know?” he said.

Che clapped back with a joke, saying he’s not “what they call ‘good at [his] job.’”

“So I don’t pay attention to all that,” Che said.

The interview concluded with a brief discussion of Che’s “joke swaps” with Colin Jost on Weekend Update. But Gillis’ controversy was brought up once more, with Che saying, “That’s why I can’t criticize anybody for swinging and missing, ‘cause I’ve definitely swung and missed too. I try to keep that heat off of me.”
