UA Rising Tide 2.0 capital campaign raises $2.1 billion

The University announced it raised $2.1 billion in charitable commitments for The Rising Tide 2.0 capital campaign, adding 1,212 new endowed scholarships and more than 800,000 square feet of new and renovated facilities.

The campaign, a 10-year comprehensive fundraising effort, launched publicly in September 2021, is the “most successful capital campaign for higher education in state history,” according to the University.

Notable gifts included in the campaign include the $35 million gift from J. Frank Barefield Jr. to the renamed Barefield College of Arts & Sciences and the $25 million gift from Catherine Styslinger to the renamed Lee J. Styslinger Jr. College of Engineering.

“One of the things that I think has encouraged Kathy and I is to peel back the layers, and see all the enormously successful and diverse programs that are available for people to support, both financially, and just through either your mentoring or your volunteer work. There are a lot of ways that you can serve the University,” said Mike Mouron, campaign chair of The Rising Tide 2.0.

Many major-based programs at the University have been a result of the campaign.

In the Culverhouse College of Business, a gift of over $15 million from C.T. and Kelley Fitzpatrick established the C.T. and Kelley Fitzpatrick Center for Value Investing, and a $5 million gift from Rance Sanders established the Rance M. Sanders Real Estate Program.

The McCollough Institute for Pre-Medical Scholars, Catherine J. Randall Research Scholars Program, Shelby Institute for Policy and Leadership and the Dr. Robert E. Witt University Fellows Program are all results of the capital campaign.

SGA President Samantha Simmons said the campaign also benefitted the SGA, with their own Capital Campaign effort launched by former president Samad Gillani supporting the future endeavors of SGA leaders continuing through her term.

“When I started my time in office, we had $600,000 raised, 400 left to go. In August, I was told we now have 300 left to go, and we’ve gotten a few sizable donations from alumni since,” she said.

Facilities that were built or renovated as a result of the capital campaign include: Catherine and Pettus Randall Welcome Center, Smith Family Center for the Performing Arts, Hewson Hall Drummond Lyon Hall, Holle Center for Communication Arts, Stran-Hardin Arena, Parker-Haun Tennis Facility, Crimson Reserve golf practice facility, UA Basketball Training and Player Development Facility, Saban Field at Bryant-Denny Stadium renovation and addition and the John and Ann Rhoads Softball Stadium renovation.

“The success of The Rising Tide 2.0 reflects the deep belief our alumni, friends and supporters have in The University of Alabama and in the promise of our students, faculty, staff and future,” said University President Peter Mohler.
