A suburban college baseball player was killed after being hit by a train over the weekend.
Eighteen-year-old Tomassino “Tommy” Offer was walking Sunday morning on Main Street in Wheaton when Metra officials said he “stopped at the tracks for a westbound UP freight.”
“According to witnesses, the westbound freight had made it through the intersection, and he then proceeded to begin crossing tracks and was struck by an eastbound freight train,” a Metra spokesperson told NBC Chicago.
Offer was a Wheaton College student and baseball player.
The team said it was “mourning the loss” of their teammate, who was a freshman on the Thunder baseball team.
“Our team is grieving and our hearts are heavy as we grieve alongside Tommy’s family and friends. This is a difficult time for us all; however, we have peace in knowing he was strong in his faith and that Christ is with him and those close to him,” Wheaton head baseball coach Matt Husted said in a statement. “Tommy was sincere in all aspects of his life. He was joyful, but a competitor – all qualities that made him a great teammate. He was really interested in other people and showed them that they were important to him. He really connected with people in the Wheaton community beyond baseball. He had a large network of people on campus.”
The incident remained under investigation Tuesday, but officials said “there’s no information at this time indicating that this was any other than a tragic accident.”
