BATAVIA, N.Y. — Batavia Police say an armed robbery at a Family Dollar in Medina ended in a crash in Batavia Tuesday morning.
Batavia Police Chief Christopher Camp says his department learned that officers in Medina were working an armed robbery at a Family Dollar, and had information on the suspect’s car.
With the help of Flock cameras, Camp says his officers found the suspect in Batavia and tried to stop him, but he took off.
As a result, Camp says the suspect later crashed into an uninvolved car at the intersection of State Street and Richmond Avenue in Batavia.
According to Camp, the suspect was initially unresponsive when officers tried to make contact. He says due to a possible weapon being displayed, officers used caution to make sure they were safe.
Camp says officers were able to take the suspect into custody safely without incident. He says the suspect is being transported to a local hospital for treatment, then will be turned over to the Medina Police Department.
The driver of the uninvolved car had minor injuries, according to Camp.
While trying to take the suspect into custody, Camp says nearby schools were in lockdown, and the nearby neighborhood had briefly sheltered in place.
