Former U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg will campaign for Scott Colom, Mississippi’s Democratic Senate nominee, in cities along the Gulf Coast on Oct. 27, one week before the federal midterm elections.
Buttigieg, in a statement, said that he is looking forward to joining Colom on the campaign trail and “seeing him elected as the next U.S. Senator from Mississippi.”
“Scott Colom is the kind of leader we need in the U.S. Senate: rooted in his community and ready to work with anyone to deliver results,” Buttigieg said. “He knows that it is not too much to ask for safer communities, good-paying jobs, and a government that works for people.”
Buttigieg last visited Mississippi in 2024 while he was transportation secretary to help break ground on a $20-million renovation of Medgar Evers Boulevard in Jackson. He also toured the Medgar and Myrlie Evers Home National Monument and visited the Mississippi Delta.
Buttigieg, a potential presidential contender in 2028, has visited traditionally conservative states such as Kansas, South Carolina, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Florida, and Montana recently to campaign for Democratic candidates.
The announcement marks the latest national Democratic figure to campaign for Colom. Sens. Lisa Blunt Rochester of Delaware, Angela Alsobrooks of Maryland and Cory Booker of New Jersey visited Mississippi in recent weeks to campaign for the Mississippi Democrat.
Sen. Raphael Warnock of Georgia will host a fundraiser, conduct a conversation with faith leaders and headline a campaign rally on behalf of Colom in Jackson on Wednesday.
Former President Barack Obama cut an ad on Monday urging Mississippians to vote for Colom ahead of the Nov. 3 election.
“Mississippi, it’s time for a change,” Obama said in the ad. “And that’s why you need to send Scott Colom to the U.S. Senate.”
Colom is competing against Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith and independent candidate Ty Pinkins.
Jake Monssen, Hyde-Smith’s campaign manager, said in a statement that Colom “will suffer the same fate as the last two candidates President Obama endorsed in Mississippi.” Monssen was referring to Obama’s 2020 endorsement of Mike Espy for U.S. Senate against Hyde-Smith and his 2019 endorsement of Jim Hood for governor.
President Donald Trump has endorsed Hyde-Smith, saying the Republican incumbent would never let Mississippi down.
