Nobody told Liam Neeson that Harvey Weinstein had recut his movie. He found out anyway, and he showed up.
That’s the story former studio marketing chief Gerry Rich tells in his new memoir, Chasing Hollywood: A Marketing Chief’s Lessons on Breaking Through, which comes out Tuesday, Oct. 13. Rich says he ended up standing right between them.
The movie was Ethan Frome, a period drama Miramax released on March 12, 1993. Neeson, now 74, starred alongside Patricia Arquette, with John Madden directing.

‘You Don’t Want to Do This, Harvey!’
According to Rich, Weinstein recut the film without telling Neeson, Arquette or Madden. Then he set up a screening to try to gain leverage, an advance look at the book reveals.
Neeson got wind of it and stormed into the screening at Robert De Niro‘s Tribeca Film Center.
“You don’t want to do this, Harvey!” he shouted, Rich writes.
“I do what I want. I’m a millionaire!” Weinstein yelled back.
Neeson looked at him “perplexed,” Rich writes, before firing back: “I’m a millionaire too. What does that matter? You don’t want to fight me.”
How It Ended
Nobody threw a punch. Cooler heads prevailed, with Rich helping keep the peace, according to the book.
The blowup made the gossip pages at the time, too. Weinstein told a New York gossip column back then that “tempers did flare,” but insisted, “If you think I’m stupid enough to shove Liam, I’m not.”

That same year, Neeson starred in Schindler’s List.

Weinstein, meanwhile, was sentenced to 15 years in prison on Sept. 23.
