ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Monday marks both Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples Day. Columbus Day became a federal holiday in 1934. In Rochester, city council members voted unanimously in 2022 to adopt an ordinance establishing Indigenous Peoples Day on the same day.
Rochester became among the first cities in New York State to adopt the day to celebrate Indigenous culture and heritage. That includes the celebration of local cultures that are part of the six-nation Haudenosaunee Confederacy. Over 100 cities across the U.S. have adopted Indigenous Peoples Day, but it’s not a federal holiday. Here’s your guide to what’s closed and local events planned on Monday:
What’s closed

In Monroe County, some public libraries will be closed for Indigenous Peoples Day, including all Rochester Public Library branches. However, others will remain open. You can see the full list here. In addition, county office buildings will be closed.
In Rochester, multiple city offices will be closed in observance of Indigenous Peoples Day.
