Nicolas Cage isn’t afraid to walk away from Hollywood’s biggest studios, especially when AI is involved.
The 62-year-old actor revealed that he may never work with Amazon again after refusing to sign an AI waiver during his time on Spider-Noir, the Prime Video series in which he played the title character.
Speaking at New York Comic Con on Saturday, Oct. 10, Cage made his feelings about the technology very clear.
“Amazon is a very AI-friendly company, to the tune of $50 billion invested in OpenAI,” he said, according to Variety.
“I am not an AI-friendly actor, so it’s like, connect those dots! I’m not a member of their club. I didn’t sign the waiver to let them use AI on Spider-Noir. I’m probably not going to be working with that studio again, but that’s okay.”
The comments come after Spider-Noir was canceled following its first season, despite earning five Emmy Awards.
But Cage isn’t turning his back on acting or television. Instead, he’s particularly interested in working with a younger generation of filmmakers who are creating projects outside the traditional Hollywood system he’s used to.
“I got to get with these young directors who are Gen Z, and they’re going at it their own way, whether it’s through the YouTube culture or whatever it is,” he explained.
“They’re doing it from scratch and by hand. I want to get with that.”
The actor also expressed interest in doing more television and mentioned a potential role in the next season of True Detective.
For Cage, the issue isn’t simply about choosing one studio over another. It’s about protecting the human element of acting at a time when AI is becoming an increasingly prominent part of the entertainment industry.
