Pope Leo XIV will undergo surgery after doctors found a small nodule in his lung in a recent medical exam. The 71-year-old pontiff announced the news on Sunday, October 11, as he spoke to the crowd gathered in St. Peter’s Square at the Vatican. Leo said doctors discovered the nodule early and advised removing it. The operation will take place at the Gemelli Hospital in Rome, and he is expected to stay in hospital for a week to recover.
After his traditional Sunday Angelus address, Leo gave the update and explained that medical examinations had shown a localized nodule. He added that his doctors believed surgery was the best course of action and that he had decided to proceed with the procedure.
“Dear friends, during some recent medical examinations, doctors found a localized nodule in my lung. It was detected at a very early stage and is well localized. The doctors believe surgery is appropriate. Following their advice, I have therefore decided to undergo an operation to remove it,” the Pope said.
In a statement obtained by People Magazine, a Vatican spokesperson said “the operation had been planned for early next week,” and the Pope is likely to be out for a week after the operation, with a recovery period of around seven days. As of now, the Vatican has not offered a diagnosis beyond the discovery of the nodule. In his address, the pope said doctors had caught it early, and there is no public confirmation that it is cancerous. There are many causes of lung nodules, and their discovery does not necessarily mean a person has cancer.
The procedure is planned to happen less than a month before Leo plans to travel to South America. The pontiff is also scheduled to travel to Uruguay, Argentina and Peru from November 6 to November 17. Although Leo said he still plans to make the trip, whether his surgery and recovery will affect the schedule remains to be seen. The Vatican has not indicated it will alter the planned visit.
In May 2025, after the death of Pope Francis in April, Leo, the first pope born in America, was elected. For now, the immediate priority is his recovery, and the Vatican is expected to share further information about his condition as it becomes available.
