Hotel workers walked off the job for the second day in a row in downtown Chicago as a strike continues.
The workers are striking during the weekend of the Chicago Marathon, saying they’re fighting for what they believe is a fair contract.
Workers were back on the picket line at the Waldorf Astoria in the Gold Coast neighborhood, one of six hotels affected by the strike.
“We’re showing the company that we deserve more, and they should give it to us,” said Nausetta Anderson a hotel employee.
The strike started Friday after Unite Here Local 1, the union representing thousands of hotel workers, said they couldn’t reach a new agreement with the Hyatt, Hilton, and Marriott.
“It is sad to be out, but what else, we don’t have another choice,” said hotel employee Miriam Salinas.
Salinas told NBC Chicago she’s been with the Waldorf for 13 years. She works in their pastry department.
“A lot of us are living paycheck by paycheck so what they’re offering really doesn’t give us much at all,” she said.
The union president said workers want better pay, healthcare, and pension, and that 32% of workers surveyed don’t make enough to cover their rent or mortgage.
“There’s plenty to go around and frankly they should do better for our folks, and we should call upon them to do better in this moment,” said Karen Kent, Unite Here Local 1 Chicago President.
Hotel employees like Alicia Montes say the strike is having an impact.
“What we found out yesterday is that a lot of the managers had to work because a lot of us aren’t working a lot of hotel guests had to leave, they didn’t like what was going on,” she said.
The Hilton, Hyatt, and Millenium Hotels and Resorts did not respond to our request for comment. Marriott said it has protocols in place to address any potential impact on staffing this weekend and remains available to meet with the local union.
The union said strikes could be called at additional hotels at any moment. Workers plan to be on the picket lines again until an agreement is reached.
Workers at the following hotels are currently on strike: Millennium Hotel Knickerbocker Chicago, Palmer House a Hilton Hotel, Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Waldorf Astoria Chicago, The Westin Chicago River North, and The Westin Michigan Avenue Chicago.
