‘DWTS’ Judge Derek Hough Speaks Out About Rampant Negativity in Personal Video

Although Dancing with the Stars is widely praised as one of the most positive shows on television, social media is ablaze with negative takes on the show, about everything from judges’ scores to certain stars’ personalities and skill levels.

On Saturday, October 10, Derek Hough posted a vulnerable video from the driver’s seat of his car, to address the rampant negativity and vow to “upgrade” his own thoughts in honor of World Mental Health Day.

Hough, a former DWTS pro who’s now one of the ABC show’s judges alongside Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli, started his video with a favorite phrase: “What’s bad is always available, but so is what’s good.”

“You know, our brains evolved for survival, not necessarily happiness,” he told his 5.5 million Instagram and Facebook followers. “We were wired to look for danger, for threats: what’s wrong? And that instinct has helped keep us alive. But now we’re living in a completely different world, still running on that same ancient software. And social media knows it, too. The algorithms tap into those instincts: negativity, outrage, criticism. They grab our attention, and the more we engage, the more we’re fed.”

Though Hough didn’t specifically mention all of the Reddit threads and TikTok posts roasting cast members or shaming viewers for voting a certain way, he acknowledged that getting caught up in drama can feel oddly “satisfying.”

In the caption of his video, Hough wrote, “Our brains were built to spot danger, that’s survival mode. But most of what we’re scanning for now isn’t danger, it’s flaws. In ourselves, in others, in every moment.”

“But is it actually making our lives better?” he asked in his video. “Are we becoming better people because of it? Because to me, that’s reactive. That’s not really intentional. That’s not the highest version of who we can actually be, and that’s why I think it’s so important to stand guard at the door of our minds, to be conscious of what we’re consuming, what we’re focusing on, and what we’re contributing.”

Hough, who’s been known to drop loving or funny comments on posts skewering his appearances on DWTS, continued, “I think we have to ask ourselves: Do I really want to be a force for good in this world, or am I just contributing to all the negative noise that’s already out there. Am I looking for reasons to tear people down, or opportunities to lift them up? And that includes how we see ourselves.”

“So I just encourage us all, myself included, to look for what’s right, look for what’s beautiful, look for the good in ourselves and in others, because what we look for, we tend to find,” Hough concluded. “And remember, what’s bad is always available, but so is what’s good. The question is, what are we choosing to see, and who are we choosing to be?”

Within an hour of posting his video, Hough’s comment section was full of responses from fans grateful to him for speaking up, including one who wrote, “Thank you for this. Hopefully people will really listen to your words and make the change to the good. Always inspiring @DerekHough!”

Season 35 of Dancing with the Stars airs live every Tuesday night on ABC and Disney+.
