The hit CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory had several recurring minor characters throughout its 12-season run. For instance, Captain Sweatpants, played by Ian Scott Rudolph, appeared in 13 episodes, usually inside Stewart’s (Kevin Sussman) comic book shop.
Rudolph made an appearance on an October 2026 episode of The Big Bang Theory Podcast, hosted by journalist Jessica Radloff. He noted that he joined the series in Season 2, Episode 20 (“The Hofstadter Isotope”), which premiered in 2009. According to Rudolph, he “had never even heard of” The Big Bang Theory and “wasn’t doing acting” when he auditioned for the non-speaking role. He explained that he and his business partner “were developing like independent films,” but “weren’t getting paid.”
Rudolph said in order “to get unemployment,” he “needed one day of work.” He said his business partner “was an assistant director” and had him “go down to Central Casting” to try to get work as a background actor. He said, however, he wasn’t interested in the Big Bang Theory role when he was offered to go in for an audition.
“A few weeks later, someone calls me from the casting, and they’re like, ‘Hey, we’re really interested in you for this new show. We think you’d be great for this part. Would you come audition for it?’ And I was like, ‘No, I’m not an actor,'” recalled the actor.
According to Rudolph, he was asked two more times to audition for Captain Sweatpants.
“They called back again. And they said, ‘No, no, they’re super interested. You don’t understand. It’s a non-speaking role, but it’s a character. It’s going to be a lot of fun.’ And I’m like, ‘I don’t know.’ And so they call a third time, and I’m like, ‘Okay, I’m going to show up,'” said Rudolph while recording the podcast episode.
He also said he believed his disinterest in being on The Big Bang Theory is how he landed the role.
“Everybody’s really excited to get this part. And at the time, I couldn’t care. I’m like, ‘I don’t care,'” said Rudolph.
Rudolph then said he thought he would only appear in one episode of the series, which ended in 2019.
“They called again a couple weeks later. They’re like, ‘Hey, we want to use that character again,'” said Rudolph, whose final appearance on The Big Bang Theory was in 2014’s Season 7, Episode 13 (“The Occupation Recalibration”), per IMDb.
