Bruce Springsteen brought a star-studded lineup together for a memorable tribute to John Lennon during a recent music festival in Maryland.
The rock icon closed out the inaugural Power to the People Festival on Oct. 3 at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland, joining fellow musicians for a rendition of Lennon’s 1971 anthem “Power to the People.” The performance served as one of the night’s grand finales, bringing together artists from across the festival’s wide-ranging lineup.
Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello organized the one-day event, which celebrated music, community action, and social justice. Springsteen, 77, headlined the festival, which also featured Foo Fighters, Dave Matthews, Joan Baez, Public Enemy, Jack Black and numerous other artists.
The Lennon cover wasn’t the only notable collaboration of the evening. Springsteen welcomed Baez, 85, to the stage for Bob Dylan’s “Chimes of Freedom” before Morello, 62, joined him for performances of The Clash’s “Clampdown” and “The Ghost of Tom Joad.”
The all-star jam continued as Matthews, 59, and Nathaniel Rateliff joined Springsteen for Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Fortunate Son.” Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl later appeared for Neil Young’s “Rockin’ in the Free World.”
The festival’s final performances also included Woody Guthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land,” with the assembled musicians joining forces for a closing celebration of protest music and rock history.
For Morello, the festival brought together performers from rock, folk, hip-hop and punk for a shared purpose. The event also encouraged civic engagement ahead of the November midterm elections, with proceeds supporting organizations focused on voting rights and community participation.
Springsteen has long incorporated socially conscious songs into his performances, and the festival gave him an opportunity to share the stage with musicians whose careers have also intersected with protest music and activism.
