The FIA stewards have opted against taking action over McLaren’s costly intra-team collision in Saturday’s Singapore Sprint, but Andrea Stella has delivered a far less forgiving verdict, branding the incident “simply not acceptable” and reminding Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri that no individual is bigger than the team.
McLaren’s team principal was in no mood to sugar-coat the consequences of the last-lap coming-together at Marina Bay, which turned a promising double-points finish into a single-point consolation.
Norris’s late attempt to pass Piastri ended with the two MCL40s making contact and spinning, leaving the Australian out of the race and his teammate recovering to eighth.
The stewards subsequently declined to impose a penalty, but their decision did little to soothe Stella’s frustration.
With a strong position in the F1 Constructors’ Championship at stake, McLaren had surrendered eight valuable points through a collision between its own drivers — precisely the sort of self-inflicted damage a leading team can ill afford.
Stella draws a line over driver rivalry
Speaking to Sky F1 after qualifying, Stella acknowledged that the Sprint had offered McLaren a valuable opportunity to score despite lacking the pace to challenge for victory. Instead, the team left the circuit with a result that fell well short of its potential.
“It's been a long day. The sprint race was a race that gave us some good points at a moment when we were not in a position to win.
“Still, we were in a position to score good points. And we saw two McLarens having contact. Basically, going out of the race. Lando could score one point, but definitely that's not enough.
“And, seeing two McLarens making contact like that is simply not acceptable. This is something that we will discuss with our drivers. We will do it in private. We will reiterate that the team's interest is far bigger than any of us.
“There's no ego. There's no person who's bigger than the interest of the McLaren Formula 1 team. This will be reiterated.
“I'm sure, like always, this will be a conversation that will lead to the team being more united and even stronger."
Stella’s message was unmistakable: whatever the drivers’ individual ambitions, their responsibility to McLaren must come first.
The Italian stopped short of publicly assigning blame, insisting the matter would be addressed privately, but his repeated emphasis on collective interests left little doubt about the seriousness with which he views the incident.
No penalty, but scrutiny turns to Sunday
The stewards’ decision means neither Norris nor Piastri faces a sporting sanction for the Sprint collision. That does not, however, remove the pressure on both drivers as they prepare for Sunday’s Grand Prix.
Norris qualified fifth for the main event, with Piastri initially seventh before a grid penalty levied upon George Russell promoted him to sixth. The McLaren pair will therefore start alongside one another, putting them in close proximity once again at the start.

McLaren needs both cars to deliver a clean race and maximise its points haul, not become embroiled in another battle that compromises the team’s result.
Stella is banking on a private conversation strengthening rather than dividing his driver line-up. But with the FIA declining to intervene, the responsibility for preventing a repeat now rests squarely with McLaren, and with two drivers who have been left in no doubt about their boss’s expectations.
