Yet another beluga whale at Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium has died, marking the fourth rescued whale to pass since 10 were brought to Chicago from the shuttered Marineland of Canada, officials said on Friday.
A 27-year-old beluga whale named Caspian died after “her condition deteriorated this week,” Shedd said in a statement on Friday.
Caspian is the fifth beluga to pass at Shedd in recent months. She’s one of four belugas who’ve died at Shedd from a group of 10 that were part of an international rescue effort involving several aquariums around the globe.
Other whales from the rescue group that have died are Peekachu, a 23-year-old female beluga, Rain, a 20-year-old female beluga, and Osiris, a 26-year-old female beluga. Beethoven, a 34-year-old male beluga that was part of the Shedd’s “resident pod” also died in recent months.
It was later determined through extensive testing that chronic gastrointestinal disease that Peekachu and Rain had before they arrived at Shedd was the likely cause of their death and that Beethoven died of old age.
An official cause of death for Osiris has not been released, through Shedd said she was “facing health challenges” and was more challenging to care for when it came to providing her an appropriate amount of calories, nutrients and electrolytes.
“Veterinary and care teams worked tirelessly to keep her on life support for several hours in an attempt to save her life, but she could not recover and ultimately passed away,” a statement from Shedd said. “This loss comes as we are still uncovering more via necropsy examinations about the chronic and severe illnesses that our previous rescued beluga losses were experiencing. Illnesses that were not detectable during daily care or ahead of their transport to Shedd. These findings provide additional context to the age and sickness-related challenges that likely contributed to their deaths.”
Shedd released additional information on Caspian’s health and new necropsy findings in a blog post that is available here.
