With only two original Chicago Med cast members remaining – Oliver Platt and S. Epatha Merkerson – it’s always nice when Gaffney Chicago Medical Center gets a visit from a previous cast member and for Season 12 that will be Colin Donnell reprising his role as Dr. Connor Rhodes, People reports.
Dr. Rhodes, a renowned cardiothoracic surgeon, will be returning to Chicago when a young heart patient needs a risky surgery and he’s the best man for the job, according to Sharon Goodwin (Merkerson), who requests his assistance.

Donnell will return for two episodes; the first will be the Season 12 fall finale, airing Dec. 9.
“Dr. Connor Rhodes was the very first character fans met in the opening scene of Chicago Med‘s premiere episode in 2015, and he’s one of my absolute favorites in the history of the series, so bringing him back home to Gaffney Chicago Medical Center has been an absolute priority for me since I joined the show,” showrunner Allen MacDonald said in a statement. “I’m so thrilled that Colin Donnell has agreed to return in his iconic role, bringing with him all of Connor’s warmth, intelligence and complexity. Both Colin and Connor have been missed.”
The fact that Dr. Rhodes is returning at the behest of Sharon Goodwin is good news for Chicago Med fans, because as of the premiere episode, Sharon’s job is still in jeopardy and she will need to fight to be reinstated, especially now that it was revealed that it was Nurse Doris (Lorena Diaz), who actually released Dr. Theo Rabari’s (Manish Dayal) medical records, despite board member Miranda Lewis (Orlagh Cassidy) claiming she has proof it was Sharon.

“Doris coming to her door at the end of the episode and confessing tells you that Goodwin has not known for sure what happened the last three months,” MacDonald told Parade in an exclusive interview. “And it’s a little more complicated. I can tell you it’s a little more complicated moving forward, how much Goodwin knew and how much she didn’t know.”
Donnell reportedly left Chicago Med due to “creative reasons related to the characters’ story evolution” during the Season 5 premiere in 2019, but he also wanted to pursue his love of theater and moved back to New York City, where he has since appeared on Broadway in Ragtime and The Shark is Broken.
Chicago Med airs Wednesday nights at 8 p.m. ET/PT on NBC. Streams next day on Peacock.
