Actor Tom Welling didn’t exactly love starring as Clark Kent in the hit WB series, Smallville, which had a 10-season run until 2011.
In celebration of the 25th anniversary of the series, Welling, his former castmates, Kristin Kreuk, who played Lana Lang, Erica Durance, who played Lois Lane, and the show’s co-creators, Al Gough and Miles Millar, appeared on Smallville star Michael Rosenbaum‘s podcast Inside of You. According to Welling, he didn’t feel much “joy” and “happiness” while shooting the television series.
“There’s this term that I’ve come across in the last couple of years, that you can only be in survival mode or creative mode at any given point. And I think I was very much in survival mode for most of those 10 years,” said Welling during the podcast reunion.
He clarified that he “had fun” when he performed stunt work as his Kryptonian counterpart.
“The stunt days were my favorite because we didn’t have to really talk. That was fun,” said the 49-year-old actor.
Millar chimed in that the Smallville cast did have long, difficult work days. According to Millar, filming sometimes wrapped at 5 am. In addition, he noted that each season of the show had more than 20 episodes.
“The volume, 22 episodes, that volume, that length of time shooting, the intensity of the scripts, I mean, it is a lot for any actor to handle,” said Millar.
Welling mentioned his unhappiness on the Smallville set during a July 2025 interview on the Inside of You podcast. He said while he usually “remember[s] more good things than bad things” about playing Clark, aka Superman, he “wasn’t very happy most of the time.”
In addition, Welling said that he wasn’t “proud” of Smallville while it was on the air.
“I’m proud of it now. Where I don’t think I was proud of it when we were doing it. And I’m not sure why because it’s hard,” said the Cheaper by the Dozen star.
