‘A sense of resiliency’; Bauman’s kicks off fall activities months after fire destroyed main market

PENFIELD, N.Y. — Bauman’s Farm Market in Penfield has kicked off its annual fall activities, despite the fire that destroyed its main market building nearly three months ago.

The fire left the building on Five Mile Line Road engulfed in flames in the early morning of July 22 and took hours for crews to battle. Since then, the farm has been selling fruit, vegetables, flowers, and more at a tent it set up. Now, the farm’s pumpkin patch and other fall traditions are open to visitors. Daniel Bauman, the field manager at his family’s farm, said he’s eager to invite the community to the fall festivities.

“There’s a certain sense of resiliency in agriculture,” he said. “And to be able to pull this stuff back to, you know, for our empire to come in and help us tear down the building and us to be able to move back here and get the teepee up. We’re going to have our maize open this weekend. You know, just to be able to have that sense of normalcy in our lives.”

    Bauman’s Harvest Festival returns

On Friday, Bauman’s is kicking off its 39th annual Harvest Festival. During weekdays except for Mondays this fall, the festival will feature a corn maze, hay ride, mini golf, jumping pillow, ropes course, inflatable obstacle course, and more. During weekends and on Oct. 9, the festival will feature even more activities.

The festival runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. You can see a complete schedule and get tickets here. Bauman’s will also hold a Cider Festival on Saturday, Oct. 24, and Sunday, Oct. 25. It will feature a variety of local ciders and beers.

    Latest on fire recovery

Since the fire, the family has removed all of the debris from the building. The fire in July destroyed many familiar staples and memories from the market. Bauman said the timeline for the recovery is still in the works.

“We’re working to construct a timeline with some of the engineers and folks we’ve hired,” Bauman said. “We’re hoping to have something more concrete coming soon. Right now, it’s a tough month for us doing all the harvesting and all the shipping and taking all the produce. So hopefully, as we get toward the end of the month, we can have a little bit of time to take a step back and figure out what we need to do to move forward,” Bauman said.

The community has continued to support the farm, with at least a dozen people stopping by when News10NBC’s Kristi Blake visited. Bauman thanked the community for its support as the farm and its employees work through a different kind of season. Check back for updates on the recovery plan.
