Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.
High school junior Ethan Zhou from Plano, Texas, has handed the University of Pennsylvania men’s swimming and diving team their first verbal commitment to the admission process* for 2028-29. He wrote on social media:
“After thoughtful consideration, I am honored to announce my verbal commitment to the admissions process for the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania to continue my academic and athletic career! First, I want to express all my gratitude to my family, friends, and teammates who have continuously supported me throughout my career. I am also incredibly grateful for Coach Kim, Coach John, Coach Andrew, Coach Sue, and Coach Jay for guiding me and shaping me into the person I am today. Finally, I would like to thank Coach Mike, Coach Andrew, and Coach Megan for their faith in me and the opportunity to represent UPenn. GO QUAKERS!! #upenn #committed”
Zhou is homeschooled. He swims year-round with Metroplex Aquatics and is one of the top breaststrokers in the cohort. We considered him an “Honorable Mention” recruit on our Way Too Early list of top boys’ swimmers from the high school class of 2028.
At Winter Juniors West last December, Zhou put up lifetime bests in his 3 best events, going 55.03 in the 100 breast, 1:58.75 in the 200 breast, and 1:50.28 in the 200 IM. He placed 20th in the 100 breast and 11th in the 200 breast, a vast improvement from the 2024 version of the same meet, where he swam a PB of 55.69 in the 100 breast and was just off his best time in the 200 with 2:02.84 – he did not final in either event.
Three months later, at Justin Sectionals, he lowered his 200 breast PB to 1:57.97 and added a best time in the 50 breast (25.68). Zhou has also dropped considerable time in his 200 fly and 200 back over the last year.
This summer, Zhou clocked lifetime bests in the 50 breast (29.23), 100 breast (1:04.10), and 200 breast (2:17.63) at U.S. Junior National Championships, finaling in the 200 (25th place).
The Penn Quakers have boasted such breaststroke standouts as Watson Nguyen, Matthew Fallon, Brendan McHugh, and Peter Whittington in recent years. Zhou will arrive just after Nguyen (the 2026 Ivy League champion in the 100/200 breast) graduates. Zhou’s best 200 breast time would have scored in the ‘B’ final at the 2026 Ivy League Men’s Championships. His 100 breast would have made the ‘C’ final. It took 1:48.07 to get a second swim in the 200 IM.
Best SCY times:
100 breast – 55.03 200 breast – 1:57.97 200 IM – 1:50.28*Note: A verbal commitment between an Ivy League coach and a prospective student-athlete is not an offer of admission, as only the Admission Office has that authority. The coach can only commit his or her support in the admission process. Ivy League Admission Offices do not issue “Likely Letters” before October 1 of the prospective student-athlete’s senior year of high school. The Likely Letter, while issued after an initial read of the student’s application, is not an offer of admission to the university.
