ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The CEO of Rochester’s Open Door Mission spent time on a bench on West Main Street near Plymouth Avenue, talking with anyone who walked by as part of a 24-hour event.
The event, organized by rescue missions across the country, aimed to re-humanize homelessness and help people lift their spirits.
“Sometimes they’re on that bench in isolation, in solitude, and not seen. So this event is to raise awareness. Come and sit have a conversation with me on the bench. Let’s try to de stigmatize the stereotypes of homelessness. Let’s bring some sensitivity to the dignity that they are people they are human,” said Robert Williams, Open Door Mission CEO.
Williams planned to remain on the bench until 3 p.m. Friday. World Homeless Day is Saturday.
