On Wednesday, creator and showrunner Mike Flanagan reintroduced viewers to the world of Carrie, this time with a modern-day twist. Initial reactions are officially in, with author Stephen King, whose book the 2026 series is loosely based on, giving it the highest praise!
This reimagined version stars Summer H. Howell in the titular role of Carrietta “Carrie” White — a sheltered teenager with an overbearing mother who attends public high school for the first time. She soon becomes the target of both in-person and online bullying. The brutal social media scandal tears through the community. After learning she has special telekinetic powers, Carrie uses them to seek revenge. The new cast also includes Alison Thornton, Josie Totah, Amber Midthunder, and Thalia Dudek.
With popular shows like The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020), Midnight Mass (2021), and The Fall of the House of Usher (2023) under his belt, Flanagan seemed like the perfect person to tell this story. He also brought along a few familiar faces from his previous projects, like Samantha Sloyan, his wife Kate Siegel, Rahul Kohli, and Ruth Codd.

King’s 1974 novel was his first to be adapted for the screen. It has been turned into three theatrical releases, the most notable being Brian De Palma’s 1976 film starring Sissy Spacek, and a made-for-TV movie. King serves as an executive producer on the 2026 series.
Last month, King shared his honest opinion on Flanagan’s adaptation, giving it a rave review: “Mike Flanagan’s version of CARRIE is brilliant,” King wrote on Threads. “What it has to say about social media is shocking and true.”
King’s son, Joe Hill, admitted that watching the trailer made his eyes water: “I was watching this trailer for Carrie on Instagram and thinking how good it looks and suddenly found myself fighting back tears,” Hill posted on Threads. “Never had that happen before, watching a preview. Maybe I’m getting a bit soggy in my fifties, I don’t know. Looks so good tho—Mike Flanagan sure can make em.”
As for the fans, the reception has been mostly positive. This commentator on X praised Flanagan for the way he approached the scary side of social media: “Flanagan has taken this classic, brought it into the world of today’s high schools, and reconstructed it for a new generation. He carefully explores social media, the current education system, the struggles and crises facing young people today, as well as the backgrounds of each character.”
“Holy sh-t,” wrote another. “The idea of making Carrie a contemporary story where she’s being bullied by a bunch of insufferable Gen Z kids works so well. Like people are so cruel and lack so much empathy today that this story is perfect for a modern setting. YES MIKE YES.”
One person highlighted one of Carrie’s most infamous moments: “Who would’ve thought that the best adaptation of Carrie’s prom scene would come in a series? Mike Flanagan, you are a father of horror.”
Some viewers couldn’t help but feel “uncomfortable” while watching it, yet still enjoyed it: “The whole story is so dark and uncomfortable, but in a way that kept me hooked. Carrie is such a tragic character because all she really wanted was to be accepted, and things just kept getting worse for her. Also, the bullying + family stuff?? Genuinely messed up. It’s not even just horror; it’s actually pretty sad when you think about it. Overall, kinda disturbing, kinda heartbreaking, but definitely worth watching. Carrie really stayed in my head after I finished it.”
