Marlins outfielder Jakob Marsee and right-hander Tyler Zuber had visits with Dr. Keith Meister at the end of the season. Those appointments don’t usually end well, and that’s the case this time around. The Marlins shared that Marsee and Zuber are both slated for elbow surgery on Monday, relays Kevin Barral of Fish On First.
Marsee is looking at a six-month absence. Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald notes the outfielder will have a UCL reconstruction, not a full repair. That distinction will help Marsee get back on the field sooner. He’ll still be hard-pressed to return in time for Opening Day.
There was no indication during the season that Marsee was dealing with an injury. President of baseball operations told reporters in his end-of-season press conference that Marsee’s left elbow was barking down the stretch. Bendix added that Marsee “was banged up all season with a lot of different things.” The elbow issue certainly didn’t affect his performance. September was Marsee’s best month of the year, as he posted a .985 OPS with three homers and two steals.
Marsee delivered a respectable campaign in his first full season in the majors. He posted a perfectly league-average 100 wRC+ with a decent mix of power and speed. Marsee reached base at a solid .348 clip and spent a decent chunk of the year atop Miami’s lineup. The glove was a mixed bag. Marsee finished with -9 Defensive Runs Saved, but 9 Outs Above Average. Statcast gave him positive marks for range but a negative score for his arm. The elbow soreness could’ve played a factor there.
Miami heads into 2027 with plenty of intriguing outfielders. Heriberto Hernandez, Owen Caissie, Griffin Conine, and Esteury Ruiz all made cases for more opportunities next season. Even with Kyle Stowers moving to first base and Javier Sanoja taking over a more permanent spot in the infield, it’ll be tough to fit all the outfielders.
Marsee’s playing time is likely safe for now as the only competent center fielder. Ruiz remained a subpar defender at the position this season, and Sanoja was the only other Marlin to appear in center field. The club will probably lean on the current options to cover the position until Marsee is healthy, though outfield prospect Cam Cannarella isn’t too far from contributing in the big leagues.
Zuber hit the injured list with a right elbow sprain during the final week of the regular season. He’ll have an internal brace procedure done to repair his UCL. Zuber is expected to miss 10 to 12 months. He’ll be sidelined for a large portion of the 2027 campaign, if not all of it.
Miami selected Zuber to the club in June. He remained in the big-league bullpen until the elbow injury. It marked his longest look in the majors. Zuber finished with a 5.67 ERA over 44 appearances, though there were positive indicators. He slashed his walk rate to 6.3%, easily his lowest mark in five seasons as a big leaguer. Zuber posted a 3.35 SIERA and a 3.83 xFIP. A .327 BABIP and a 20.4% home run-to-flyball rate could be to blame for his bloated ERA, though he’s often had homer issues.
The Marlins bullpen will look a lot different next season. Zuber, William Kempner, and Andrew Nardi are facing long-term injuries. Closer Pete Fairbanks is a free agent. Ronny Henriquez and Anthony Bender are expected to rejoin the unit after missing time this year. Miami could once again be in the market for a reasonably-priced veteran to fill the closer role.
