Tropical Storm Isaias is heading for the Gulf Coast ahead of Saturday’s game against Georgia, and the forecast has left both the kickoff and President Donald Trump’s planned visit to campus in doubt.
Alabama and Georgia are set to play at 6:30 p.m. at Bryant-Denny Stadium, with ESPN’s “College GameDay” also scheduled to broadcast from campus. Forecasts say the storm could strengthen into a hurricane before reaching the coast late Friday or early Saturday, then move inland toward Tuscaloosa.
The National Weather Service said central Alabama could see heavy rain and gusty winds from Friday into Saturday, affecting pregame activities and the game itself.
Meteorologist James Spann said rain was likely during the game, with winds possibly gusting to 30 to 40 mph and a tornado threat depending on the storm’s track. Spann told AL.com that moving the game is “clearly on the table” if a hurricane comes up Mobile Bay on Saturday morning.
“I don’t know if you wouldn’t be playing that game in Tuscaloosa that you’ve got the chance of winds gusting to 50 miles an hour, torrential rain and the chance of isolated tornadoes,” Spann said.
He later told ABC 33/40 that Sunday night “would be the best choice” if the current forecast holds, because “the weather should be dry in Tuscaloosa by then.”
Alabama Athletics said it is closely monitoring the forecast and, for now, has no plans to alter the contest.
“We will continue to observe conditions throughout the week and remain in communication with the Southeastern Conference office, as needed,” the department said. “Fans are encouraged to rely on official Alabama Athletics and SEC channels for the latest information regarding Saturday’s game.”
Trump originally announced last week he was planning to be at the game but pulled back and sounded less sure on Wednesday. When he was asked about the storm, he said he wasn’t aware of the hurricane but would ultimately let the weather decide.
“If there’s a hurricane, I wouldn’t wanna do anything to take the focus off all the great people that work on those things,” Trump said. “I hadn’t heard about a hurricane. A hurricane is going in the vicinity of Alabama? That’s not good. Certainly, I’m gonna let the hurricane determine.”
A presidential visit to Tuscaloosa already means Secret Service staffing around campus, road closures and extra security around the stadium. The threat of severe weather or a postponed kickoff would complicate and potentially affect motorcade routes, crowds and the timing of his arrival.
Trump was last at Bryant-Denny for the 2024 game against Georgia, and he attended Texas-Tennessee in Knoxville on Sept. 26.
Spann called the mix of a top-10 game, “College GameDay” coming to Tuscaloosa and a presidential visit during a hurricane threat “a really bad scenario,” but said he expected officials to put safety first.
Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer said the impact “depends on the level of weather you get,” and that his focus has stayed on the team.
“I’m just getting our football team ready,” DeBoer said Wednesday on the SEC teleconference. “It hasn’t affected us much other than we’re doing the wet ball drills and getting wet ball involved with some of our team reps, just like we did last week at times, preparing for the rain a week ago.”
Tropical Storm Isaias was still over the southwestern Gulf on Wednesday morning, with sustained winds near 40 to 45 mph, and it was expected to become a hurricane within about 24 hours. Officials said the track should be clearer over the next day or two.
