In his new memoir, One Helluva Ride, the Oscar winner recalls filming the 1992 erotic thriller with Sharon Stone and reveals that an intimate scene between the pair became physically uncomfortable for his co-star.
Douglas, 82, and Stone, 68, had reportedly agreed not to rely on body doubles for the movie’s most revealing sequence. According to Douglas, the scene took five days to complete, making the experience particularly demanding for both actors.
Stone initially attempted to maintain some modesty while filming, wearing a patch over her crotch. However, Douglas recalled that she eventually abandoned the idea.
“During the scene, Sharon started out wearing a patch over her crotch, a minimal gesture towards modesty,” he wrote. “But she eventually decided to forgo it, saying, ‘Let’s stop pretending. I’m nude, we all know it. Let’s go.”
Despite how convincing the finished scene appeared on screen, Douglas emphasized that he and Stone were not actually intimate during filming.
“I did, however, have to get my face close to some rather delicate areas,” he explained.
The filming soon became uncomfortable for Stone, who noticed the effect Douglas’ facial stubble was having on her skin.
“After a couple of takes, Sharon said, ‘Please go easy. Your stubble is really scratching me!’”
Douglas said he immediately noticed that Stone’s upper thighs had become “completely red and chafed,” leaving him feeling “horrible” about the situation.
The scene ultimately became one of the most memorable moments from Basic Instinct, helping cement the movie’s reputation as one of the defining erotic thrillers of the 1990s.
